Methadone Treatment & Pregnancy

There is no drug that is absolutely safe during pregnancy. Although methadone has been taken during pregnancy and women have been able to breast-feed successfully, the potential risks of the use of methadone in pregnancy are not completely known.

At any time if you Methadone Treatment & Pregnancysuspect you are pregnant, you must inform the physician. Early pre-natal care, keeping your dose stable, and avoiding all other drugs are important procedures to follow to enhance your chances of delivering a normal, healthy baby.

Withdrawing from methadone during pregnancy is NOT recommended. You must provide documentation of your pre-natal care and authorize the staff physician to communicate with your obstetric physician.

Methadone maintenance treatment is recommended standard care for opioid dependent women who become pregnant.
