Methadone Treatment & Pregnancy
There is no drug that is absolutely safe during pregnancy. Although methadone has been taken during pregnancy and women have been able to breast-feed successfully, the potential risks of the use of methadone in pregnancy are not completely known.
At any time if you 
suspect
you are pregnant, you must inform the physician. Early pre-natal care, keeping
your dose stable, and avoiding all other drugs are important procedures to
follow to enhance your chances of delivering a normal, healthy baby.
Withdrawing from methadone during pregnancy is NOT recommended. You must provide documentation of your pre-natal care and authorize the staff physician to communicate with your obstetric physician.
Methadone maintenance treatment is recommended standard care for opioid dependent women who become pregnant.
